If your 8th grader is prepping for specialized high school admissions, be sure they’re being tutored on the latest admission test material.

As of this fall, the New York City Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is being overhauled for the first time in 20 years, according to a recent article on DNAInfo.com.

The Department of Education worked with Pearson- the SHSAT administrator- to level the playing field to allow more racial and ethnic diversity in New York City’s specialized high schools.

At  FTKny.com, we remain vigilant when it comes to new SHSAT focus and formats to arm your children with the skills and knowledge for admission into the school(s) of your choosing.

These latest changes were implemented to make the new SHSAT more reflective of all students’ classwork, not just a small segment with more resources at its disposal, according to the article.

Specific changes include extended testing time, from 150 to 180 minutes. Meanwhile, the number of questions will also be extended from 95 to 114, half covering English and half covering math, the article disclosed.

Moreover, the new SHSAT requires participants to show their work for five math questions, rather than pick from multiple-choice options. There are also 20 questions in the English section requiring test-takers to edit and revise sentences, according to the article.

“These changes to the SHSAT make it fairer and more equitable for our students by better reflecting what they actually learn in class,” DOE spokesman Will Mantel said. “…now our focus is on getting practice items to schools, students, and community organizations in every neighborhood across the city.”

We ensure your child has the access to these practice items they need to succeed.

If you’re child going to spend two to three times a week for several months with a tutor, you’re going to want to ensure this tutor is covering the right material. This will save you time, money and equip our children for a fruitful career as adults.

Finding a tutor trained and privy to these latest updates is imperative to your child’s success when it comes to the new NYC SHSAT.

Our SHSAT prep program is second to none. We are ahead of the curve, preparing 8th graders for entry into some of the most elite schools in city, let alone in the country.

We have our fingers on the pulse of the ever-changing requirements bestowed upon our children to pass admission tests into the best schools so they can look forward to a bright future.

We at FTKny.com are different than typical tutoring centers; we entertain your child’s individuality to address their needs accordingly.
