Karen has combined her passion for educating children and love of the written word into a successful career teaching Language Arts and reading to middle and high school students.
Karen Scott has a background in film and television, graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Motion Picture Technology. After more than a decade working in the industry in New York and Miami, she was invited to participate in the Miami Children’s Film Festival. Collaborating with teachers and students and assisting them in seeing their visions come to life on the screen was a source of inspiration for Karen to pursue a career in education.
During her fifteen-years teaching in public schools, Karen was twice recognized by the Department of Education and Office of the Governor: first for her 8th grade students achieving the second highest scores in their district on the state writing assessment, and next as one of the top 100 highly effective teachers in her district based on student learning gains on the state ELA assessment.
Recently returned from a yearlong sabbatical during which she travelled the country off-grid in her Toyota 4Runner with a rooftop tent and worked on her first novel, Karen is excited to be back in the New York groove. In her free time Karen can be found primitive camping, hiking, and kayaking in remote locations off the beaten path. When the weather doesn’t allow for off-roading, Karen can be found at home curled up with a good book or working on her novel in progress.
