Leonardo Da Vinci was viewed as one of the most brilliant minds in recorded history. At the moment of birth, every child has greater potential intelligence than Da Vinci ever used.

Many of us refer to Leonardo da Vinci in our presentations to parents. He is still considered one of the world’s greatest thinkers with unparalleled genius. I received a wonderful gift from a friend – a book called “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci” by Michael J. Gelb. (See Nancy’s Book Corner)

Leonardo da Vinci was the poster child of the Renaissance Man. He was an artist, architect, sculptor, inventor, military engineer and scientist. The Renaissance Man or Woman, or uomo universale, suggests a well-rounded, balanced person who is comfortable with both art and science. The modern uomo universale is also said to need to be computer literate, globally aware and mentally literate (familiar with the workings of the human mind.) Those who have studied da Vinci identified seven principles that he used in expressing his genius.

Curiosità – an insatiable curious approach to life and an unrelenting quest for continuous learning

Dimostrazione – a commitment to test knowledge through experience, persistence and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Learning through practical experience.

Sensazione – the continual refinement of the senses as the means to enliven experience

Leonardo Da Vinci was viewed as one of the most brilliant minds in recorded history. At the moment of birth, every child has greater potential intelligence than Da Vinci ever used.

Sfumato – a willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox and uncertainty

Arte/Scienza – the development of the balance between science and art, logic and imagination. Whole-brain thinking.

Corporalita – the cultivation of grace, ambidexterity, fitness and poise

Connessione – a recognition of and appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and phenomena. Systems thinking.

Do these principles sound familiar?  Despite the trend to specialization, the world needs the modern uomo universale and FasTracKids programs and methodology are teaching children to learn according to these Da Vincian Principles. You, through your work and your commitment to the Kids, are developing the geniuses for our future. Thank you.
